General information
Binding Information
Please also note the "Binding Information" (PDF, 132 kB), which you receive by email at the beginning of the registration period as well.
When and how?
- In the third and fourth week of each semester
- Via myStudies
What?
- Registration for session and end-of-semester examinations must be done actively. All of the examination information regarding performance assessments is published from the start of the semester in myStudies under "Course registration" (click on the name of the course) resp. in the course catalogue.
- Where examinations are part of an examination block, students may only register for the whole block as opposed to individual examinations.
The first year examinations are also a block and must be taken as such in an examination session.
- Registration is not required for performance assessments which take the form of ungraded or graded semester performance.
Students are automatically registered when they enrol in a course.
- See also "Types of examination".
Which subjects are displayed in the registration proposal?
- All courses in which students have enrolled and which take the form of a session examination or an end-of-semester examination,
- which have not yet been examined and passed.
Which subjects are not displayed in the registration proposal?
- Courses in which you have not enrolled.
You need to enrol in any missing course first, after which you can register online for the examination in the normal manner.
- Courses taking the form of "graded/ungraded semester performance".
Active registration is not required for these courses.
What do students have to do if they are unable to register online?
- A corresponding message will be shown if it is not possible to register online. The registration form must then be printed out.
- The completed form must be returned, in person, to the Examinations Office no later than the registration deadline.
Session examinations rescheduled to earlier dates outside the examination session
Conditions
Like all ETH Zurich students, exchange students are obligated to sit their examinations during the official examination periods.
You may request to shift your session examinations to dates outside the examination session if:
- it is your last semester at ETH Zurich,
- the examiner agrees to an individual rescheduling of the exam, and
- one of the following reasons apply:
- You have to go back to your home university, but one or more written exams take place
a) within one week before the start of the semester at your home university or
b) after the start of the semester at your home university.
Proof to be handed in: Printout of a webpage of your home university, that shows the semester dates or email-confirmation by your home university's supervisor or mobility advisor.
- You have to start working on a thesis (Bachelor, Master, PhD) at your home university but one or more written exams take place
a) within one week before the start of your thesis or
b) after the start of your thesis at your home university.
Proof to be handed in: Email-confirmation by your home university's supervisor or mobility advisor.
- You have to start an internship and this internship is an integral part of your study programme. One or more written exams take place
a) within one week before the start of your internship or
b) after the start of your internship.
Proof to be handed in: Email-confirmation of your home university's internship supervisor or mobility advisor.
Important: At the time of the deadline expiration for requests to shift session exams to a date outside the examination session only written examination dates will be published. In case of oral exams, please also contact the examiner(s) and arrange a date before the start of the semester at your home university resp. before the start of your thesis/internship.
In the form "Registration form for examination dates outside the examination session" which is listed below please leave the column "Original date, time" empty if it concerns an oral examination.
Procedure for mobility students
- Prepare a document which proves that one of the above mentioned reasons applies.
- Write a request using the form "Written request" (PDF, 300 kB). Explain why you request examination dates outside the examination session.
- Register online at myStudies for all examinations you plan to take (observe the registration deadline), regardless of any requests or questions you have regarding the exam(s). After you have registered for all examinations, print out the examination registration form. This form lists all the examinations you have registered for.
- Fill out the form "Registration form for examination dates outside the examination session" (PDF, 60 kB), list all examinations you request to sit outside the examination session and print out the form.
- Put the four documents required above together. With these documents, go to the examiners of each course and ask for individual examination dates. Provided that the examiners agree, ask for their signatures to confirm the arrangements on the form “Registration form for examination dates outside the examination session”.
Attention: If the mode of examination is changed from written to oral, you also have to sign a disclaimer (PDF, 248 kB). Print it out, sign it and also hand it in with your request.
- After you have arranged and confirmed all individual examination dates, send the complete request to:
ETH Zürich
Student Exchange Office
Rämistrasse 101, HG F 23.1
CH-8092 Zürich
Please observe the deadline for such requests communicated by email at the beginning of the examination registration period.
Special cases
Retaking an end-of-semester examination in the same semester
- In some cases it is possible for students to retake an end-of-semester examination which they have failed right at the start of the next semester.
These are marked "A repetition date is offered in the same semester".
- Once the semester is finished, you can register to retake an examination using myStudies. To do this, however, failure of the first attempt of the examination must have already been decreed.
Please contact your Study Administration Office first should you have any problems.
Late registration for examinations
- In justified exceptional cases, a late registration – possibly subject to additional requirements – may still be considered.
You must come to the Examinations Office in person. Please note the opening times. You must also pay a late registration fee.
