General information
Binding Information
- In any case please note the details listed in the "Binding Information" (PDF, 93 kB), which are sent to you as an attachment to the email at the beginning of the registration period.
When and how?
- In the third and fourth week of each semester
- Via myStudies
What?
- Registration for session and end-of-semester examinations must be done actively. All of the examination information regarding performance assessments is published from the start of the semester in myStudies under "Course registration" (click on the name of the course) resp. in the Course Catalogue itself.
- Where examinations are part of an examination block, students may only register for the whole block as opposed to individual examinations.
The first-year examinations are also a block and must be taken as such in an examination session.
- Registration is not required for performance assessments which take the type of ungraded or graded semester performance.
Students are automatically registered when they enrol in a course.
- See also "Types of examination".
Which subjects are displayed in the registration proposal?
- All courses in which you have enrolled for which the performance assessment takes the type of a session examination or an end-of-semester examination,
- which have not yet been examined and passed,
- and for which you enrolled within the last four semesters
Which subjects are not displayed in the registration proposal?
- Courses in which you have not enrolled.
You need to enrol in any missing course first, after which you can register online for the examination in the normal manner.
- Courses in which you enrolled more than four semesters ago.
In this case, you must register in person at the Examinations Office. To this end, print out the registration form from myStudies.
- Courses taking the form of "graded or ungraded semester performance".
Active registration is not required for such courses.
- Courses which are part of an examination block and from which you have officially been exempted by the Admissions Office.
In this case, only part of a block is displayed.
In which cases is online registration for examinations not possible?
- For students granted special authorisation (e.g. individual exemptions, additional requirements), registration may only be possible manually at the Examinations Office.
- For students with special registration circumstances, e.g. due to a change in the programme regulations or a stay abroad.
- In these cases – or if individual subjects are missing – you must register in person at the Examinations Office. To this end, print out the registration form from myStudies.
Time periods for first-year examinations
- The first-year examinations must be passed within two years after starting a Bachelor programme. The first attempt should be made immediately at the end of the first year, but no later than during the following winter session.
- Any repetition must be no later than at the end of the second year.
Special cases
Retaking an end-of-semester examination in the same semester
- In some cases it is possible for students to repeat an end-of-semester examination which they have failed right at the start of the next semester.
These are marked in the course catalogue as "A repetition date is offered in the same semester".
- Once the semester is finished, you can register to repeat an examination using myStudies. However, failure of the first attempt of the examination must have already been decreed.
Please contact the Study Administration Office first should you have any problems.
Late registration for examinations
- In justified exceptional cases, a late registration – possibly subject to additional requirements – may still be considered.
You must come to the Examinations Office in person. Please note the opening hours. You must also pay a late registration fee.
I have taken exams for individual subjects of an examination block abroad.
- The student exchange coordinator for your programme determines which subjects can be recognised.
- The Study Administration Office records the courses you have taken abroad.
- Should such a course nevertheless appear in a suggested examination block, please contact your Study Administration Office.
I cannot attend the examination session (exchange, mandatory internship,...)
- Only in well-founded cases can session examinations be held outside of the examination session.
- To be able to reschedule a session examination to a date outside of the examination session because of a mandatory industrial internship, or because of other cogent reasons the following rules apply:
(In case of mobility: See information further down.)
- Register for all examinations through myStudies
- Draft a written request
- Include a confirmation that justifies your request.
- Fill out the relevant forms indicated below (ensure they are signed by the responsible examiners and the Director of Studies):
Table of examinations (PDF, 50 kB)
Disclaimer (PDF, 247 kB)
(You only have to fill out this form if the exam mode is changed from written to oral because the exam will now take place outside of the examination session.
Please note that a change of the exam mode is only possible in justified exceptional cases.)
Keep in mind, that the processing of your request will take some time. We therefore ask you to hand in your request as early as possible (no later than three weeks before the newly arranged examination date).
Please send above mentioned documents to the address below:
ATTENTION: If the request is about examination blocks (e.g. First Year Examinations) in combination with professional sporting events please contact the Head of Student Administration, Mrs. Dr. P. Wyrsch, prior to submitting the written request (consultation-hours: Tuesday & Thursday, 2 - 3 p.m.).

Studies and high-performance sports
- As an absolute condition for a certain flexibility in your studies, you have to be an acknowledged elite athlete. In particular, this means that there has to be an official confirmation of the respective sports association and/or SwissOlympic.
The goal is to enable you to coordinate your studies and high-performance sports optimally. However, no concessions will be made in regard to subject-specific requirements (for your studies and for performance assessments)!
At the earliest possible time, a curriculum will be drawn up together with the responsible study program advisor by taking into account your sporting plans and study intentions. This will allow you to coordinate your sports activities and your studies.
- Written requests for exceptional arrangements have to be submitted to the following address (along with the concrete curriculum) by the start of the examination registration period at the latest:
ETH Zürich / Rectorate
Mrs. Dr. P. Wyrsch
Head of Student Administration
Rämistrasse 101, HG FO 22.1
CH-8092 Zürich
An official confirmation of the respective sports association and/or SwissOlympic, incl. a possible practice or competition schedule has to be enclosed to this request.
It goes without saying that any exceptional arrangements have to be compiled individually due to greatly different needs.
We do not intend to reschedule exams to an earlier time.
