External dissertation

Usually, doctoral theses are carried out at an institute at ETH Zurich or at one of the research institutes within the ETH domain, namely:

- PSI (Paul Scherrer Institute)

- WSL (Swiss Federal Institute for Forest, Snow and Landscape Research)

- EMPA (Swiss Federal Institute of Materials Science & Technology)

- EAWAG (Swiss Federal Institute of Aquatic Science and Technology)

It is also possible to carry out your dissertation outside the ETH domain. Please read the prerequisites carefully listed on the form for the "Approval of implementing a dissertation outside the ETH domain" (PDF, 52 kB) This form must be completed and included, along with the concept for an external dissertation, with your full application. The concept should clarify why the dissertation will be implemented outside of the ETH domain.

Short research stays outside the ETH domain can be approved by your supervisor. In any case, it must be guaranteed that the supervisor has access to the infrastructure and the experiment documentation.
