Teaching Assignments

Teaching assignments may be conducted by lecturers who are not professors or senior lecturers and can teach independently at ETH Zurich.

ETH Zurich differentiates between „internal” and “external” lecturers:

Internal lecturers are employed at one of the ETH domain research institutes, joint ETHZ-UZH institutes and at EPFL. Internal lecturers are not entitled to any remuneration.

External lecturers do not have a formal employment contract with ETH. Instead, they conclude a part-time work contract with ETH and are either entitled to lecturer fees or do not charge for their services.

Exception: To be eligible for remuneration, senior lecturers who are neither employed at ETH nor within the ETH domain require a teaching assignment contract. They are considered as external lecturers.

The issuing of teaching assignments and remuneration of lecturers at ETH Zurich are specified in the Directives on the issuing of teaching assignments and remuneration of lecturers at ETH Zurich of 17.06.2008.

New lecturers must be registered at the Room and Course Scheduling Office. Please complete the teaching assignment application form which will then be sent by your department directly to our office.

If the course in question is listed in the UZH and ETH Zurich course catalogue, UZH lecturers must not, as a rule, be registered for a teaching assignment.

If, however, the course is only run by ETH Zurich, UZH lecturers must then be registered for a teaching assignment. They are considered as “external lecturers".

Please use the form "Registration of University of Zurich Lecturers" for the registration of UZH lecturers.
