Admission procedure

1. Full doctoral applications should be sent to the Doctoral Administration.
2. Doctoral students are provisionally matriculated and receive an ETH card.
3. The doctoral applications are sent along with the Prorector for Doctoral Studies’ evaluation to the responsible department. If requested by the department, the Prorector for Doctoral Studies can in special cases admit a doctoral student without consulting the department.
4. The doctoral committee evaluates the applications, consults the supervisor, and forwards their appraisal to the department, who in turn request the Prorector for Doctoral Studies to either admit or reject the candidate, including, if any, the additional requirements. The applications do not have to be handled at the Department Conference.
5. The department should list the following details for candidates who have to fulfil additional requirements:
   - subject to be examined and type of exam (oral, written, presentation ….)
   - examiners
   - duration of exam
   - If the additional requirements cannot be fulfilled within one year, a request for deadline extension should be sent to the Prorector for Doctoral Studies.
6. Once the doctoral candidates’ dossiers have been returned to the Doctoral Administration, the admission letters (decrees) are then issued and the candidates are provisionally admitted to doctoral studies at ETH.
