Technical Requirements for the Web Applications

Web Browser Configuration

Cookies have to be allowed. Although the applications can function without cookies, we can guarantee the entire funtionality only with cookies.

PDF-Viewer

For example Adobe Acrobat Reader should be installed. This is best configured so that the Webbrowser will react to an inquiry for a PDF-document by automatically starting the Viewer and showing the document in a new window (plug-in configuration in the Webbrowser).

Screen Size

Minimum 1024 x 768 pixel or more.

Internet Connection

Data volumes of 2–3 MB can be achieved with big PDF-documents or long search results. Depending on the internet connection, downloads can take a long time (modem 28.8 kbit/s -> ~2 minutes transfer time).

JavaScript

JavaScript is used to improve substaintially the usability and comfort of our web applications. We therefore recomend the use of JavaScript.
However, when a new page is required in order to show print preview, it can be possible that this additional page will not show without switching on Javascript.

Browser Compatibility

In our tests we strove to consider the various browsers which, in our experience, access the applications most frequently.

In particular, we tested the following versions:

PDF Viewer Compatibility

Printing PDF-data und printer-friendly web-pages

Depending on the installed operating system and browser version (particularly with mixed language versions) it can occur that in the printer dialogue the standard paper size shown is automatically "Letter". Our web-applications are designed to use "A4".
For best results, always check standard paper size when printing.

Configurating PoUp-Block

Modern browsers will prevent the opening of new windows while using Javascript.
All modern browsers allow the activation of specifically selected URL's (e.g. eAdressen - adresses and personal data, eDoz, myStudies - online enrolment, Course Catalogue and/or all ending with ".ethz.ch"), either permanently or during a one-time session.
After correct configuration, the applications should be utilizable to their usual full extent and function.
